We are proud to announce Nathaniel Sheppard III as the 2025 Winner of the JSE Acquisition Prize. Nathaniel is a painter and master printmaker based in Johannesburg. His artistic practice is deeply rooted in examining the consumption and retelling of histories through storytelling. Utilizing a variety of printmaking techniques, Sheppard expands on his collage practice, treating collage as a note-taking device. His work delves into historical imagery representing Black identities throughout history, spanning from figurative representation to ephemeral printed media. Sheppard's art is a personal interrogation of the historical intersections between his father's African American heritage and his mother's Coloured/Indian South African background. Nathaniel's artwork will now be inducted into the Johannesburg Stock Exchange's private art collection.
